쿵푸(功夫) - 마르코 폴로에서

쿵푸에선 이렇게 말한다.

한 손은 거짓말을 하고 다른 손은 진실을 말한다.

네가 어느 날 서방으로 돌아갔을 때

사람들에게 '쿵푸'라는 낯선 단어를 어찌 설명하겠느냐?

싸우는 방법이라고 설명할 것이냐?

아니면 소림사의 승려처럼 학과 호랑이의 영혼을 부르는 것이라 말하겠느냐!

쿵푸(功夫)

이것은 '노력에서 얻어낸 뛰어난 기술'을 말함이다.

위대한 시인은 쿵푸에 도달하였다.

화가, 서예가, 그들도 쿵푸를 가졌다 말할 수 있다.

심지어 요리사도 

계단을 비로 쓰는 사람도,

능수능란한 하인도

쿵푸를 가졌다 할 수 있다.

연습, 

준비,

끊임없는 반복.

정신이 지치고 몸이 아파올 때까지,

땀을 흘리기에도 피곤하고,

숨쉬기조차 지칠 때까지.

그것만이, 그 길만이

쿵푸를 얻는 방법이다.

In kung fu, we say, "One hand lies, the other hand tells the truth."

If you, one day, make it back to the West

what will you tell men of this strange word, "kung fu"?

Will you tell them that it means to fight?

Or will you say like a monk from Shaolin to summon the spirit.

Kung fu.

It means, "supreme skill from hard work."

A great poet has reached kung fu.

The painter, the calligrapher, they can be said to have kung fu.

Even the cook, the one who sweeps steps 

or a masterful servant can have kung fu

Practice. 

Preparation.

Endless Repetition.

Until your mind is weary, and your bones ache.

Until you're too tired to sweat too wasted to breathe.

That is the way, the only way

one acquires kung fu.
